Homebrew
A merfolk that doesn't take particularly after it's ancestry, instead taking after skills thought them by society. Some say that they are lesser merfolk for not having any of the skills that should come naturally to any respectable merfolk, or that they lack in unique skills. These are the words of people who never had to deal with societal merfolk. for each merfolk that has learned to make the most out of heavy armour or similar expected skill there is at least one with completely unpredictable skills like one who can see with the smallest amount of light and can't be found until it's too late. And even those with expected skills are undeniably skilled in the things they have trained in.
Trained. A societal merfolk is trained in a particular set of skills. You proficient in one more language then the average merfolk. You also get one skill proficiency and one tool proficiency.
Mastery. By either natural skill or rigorous training you are able to do things most people would struggle to compare to. You gain one feat of your choice for which you qualify.
